Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical notion in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems difficult at first, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming collection of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players trying for the high hand, as well as several shooting for the low hand.
