Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi low provides an exciting range of wagering choices and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, along with several shooting for the low hand.
