Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complex at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play easily enough.
