Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi/low starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the players have either called or folded, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where many players often get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same approach in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
While it seems complex at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, and several battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
