Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in just about all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
While it seems difficult at the start, following a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting array of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
