Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players often get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
Although it seems complicated at first, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting assortment of betting options and seeing that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, as well as many battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
