Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough.
