Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi low starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with several trying for the low.
