Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several players trying for the high hand, along with many trying for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
