Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in nearly all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at first, after a few hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing array of betting options and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, as well as a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
