Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complex initially, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, and many trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
