Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi-low begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complex at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an exciting collection of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals shooting for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand.
