Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi low starts just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at first, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi low offers an amazing array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players shooting for the high hand, along with many battling for the low.
